This past March, we wrote about the disgusting and illegal campaign to destroy the Association of Deputy District Attorneys, the union of Los Angeles County prosecutors, conducted by Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley. (“LA District Attorney Steve Cooley – A Union Buster Who Puts Scott Walker to Shame“) At the time, a lawsuit filed by the union and assistant district attorneys who were personally damaged by Cooley’s acts was pending.
Parts of that lawsuit has now been settled, and the County of Los Angeles and Cooley have agreed to pay the plaintiffs the sum of $600,000 in damages, and they have also agreed that “a preliminary federal injunction ordering Cooley and other county officials not to discipline or discriminate against prosecutors for belonging to the union would remain in effect for the rest of Cooley’s tenure as D.A.”
If you recall, a hearing officer of the county’s Employee Relations Commission had determined that Cooley “gave explanations that “were false and clearly pretexts” for conducting a “deliberate and thinly disguised campaign” aimed at destroying the union.”
Claims brought by two additional prosecutors who suffered from Cooley’s anti-union vendetta still have claims pending and their cases are set for trial next month.
As in Wisconsin, a scumwad political hack uses his office for right-wing partisan activities, and it is the people of the community who suffer and the taxpayers who must pay the tab.
