An Unholy Four Embrace Treason

The people who run the republican party, rush limbaugh, ann coulter and william kristol, were joined this week by conservative “Democrat” Jim Webb in issuing pro-Confederate flag – anti-USA statements so off the wall and outright treasonous that one has to wonder how, for the first three of them, they continue to be so embraced by the super-patriot gop base, and on the part of the fourth, Webb, how someone so out of touch with liberal and progressive beliefs could even consider running for the party of the left’s presidential nomination.

Webb, a former US Senator from Virginia, has always been a "Blue-Dog", right-of-center pseudo-Demo on several key issues, including firearms, immigration, and government spying and Patriot Act abrogation of constitutional rights, but now he has separated himself totally from mainstream liberal thought as he refused to join the chorus of statespersons and

everyday citizens in calling for the removal of the Confederate Battle Flag from display on government property AND In praising the traitors who fought against the USA in the Civil War. In the true spirit of the links of limbaugh, coulter and kristol, Webb chose to heap praise on the treacherous murderers who wore the Confederate gray as they attacked the United States and killed American soldiers: “Honorable Americans fought on both sides in the Civil War”.

Even more laughable was his outrageous statement that “slavery was not inextricably tied to the Confederate side”. What history classes did he take? Where did he go to school? Oh, yea, he went to the clown school that pretends to educate the rich and connected for outrageous fees, that sea of corruption known as the “university” of southern California. Shoulda’ known that would be the place where he learned all this garbage.

The other three gop stalwarts could of course be counted on to continue to distort the truth and even to criticize their fellow republicans who dared to recognize reality and voice opinions, for once, on the correct side of a major political issue.

Grow and Make
Their leader, limbaugh, was his usual disgusting self, saying that the issue was NOT about the flag, but rather an “all-out [liberal] assault on what the left thinks is a last remaining enclave of solid Republican voters, and that is the South”. He went on to pontificate that the next target would be the Stars and Stripes, which he said liberals would say "… has flown
over slavery and symbolized racism, discrimination, bigotry, homophobia for hundreds of years”.

But of course such idiocy is expected of him, as he struggles to get more and more outrageous as his listeners dwindle down to a precious few as ratio station after ratio station and sponsor after sponsor abandon him.

Coulter took the opportunity to blame Democrats for slavery and racism, totally ignoring the fact of the massive exit of racist and pro-segregation 20th century democrats to the Republican party, and went on to say that Nikki Haley is “an immigrant that does not understand America’s history”. She further went on to prove what she was trying to rationalize, by saying that the Confederate Battle flag did not fly over Confederate capitols, but was merely “the battle flag” that “honored” robert e. lee. Well, yea. And of course she stopped there, failing to mention the flag becoming THE symbol of mid-20th century racism and segregation.

This self-styled “student of American history” also has a whole lot to learn, and understand, about American history. At least she, unlike Webb, attended a couple of real schools, Cornell and the University of Michigan, so one should not blame a lack of education on her misguided opinions, rather just her unwillingness to accept reality and her desire to re-write facts to fit her beliefs.

Kristol actually said he supported NOT having Confederate flags lying in front of state capitols, but still took the opportunity to thoroughly trash liberal ideology, saying that liberals would have appeased the south rather than engaging in a civil war. But his most outrageous comments concerned his belief that "we" are not giving Confederate soldiers the respect they deserved.Help fundraise for schools in need while shopping at The Ultimate Green Store.com!

Respect? For Confederate soldiers? After tweeting about this and some brief comments earlier in the week, yesterday he repeated and expanded on this during a live TV appearance, and got into a brief shouting match with Bloomberg Politics editor John Heilemann.

Confederate soldiers fought to preserve the Confederate states’ stringent beliefs on racism, slavery, segregation and second-class citizenship. They were the mercenaries who maimed and killed United States citizens and soldiers to preserve the economic system of the old, moribund south. Respect? Hell no.

But back to the flag and facts that all these people choose to ignore. The Confederate Battle Flag was originally used by Confederate troops during the Civil War and their assault against the United State of America in order to preserve their way of life and their moribund economy that was dependent on slavery. But, the flag became THE symbol of racism and segregation in the late 1940s and early 1950s when it was used as the symbol for the Dixiecrats and then of the Ku Klux Klan. The design was then added to southern state flags as their statement that they would defy the US Supreme Court ruling in Brown v Board of Education and refuse to desegregate schools. The flag remains today as a symbol of racism and slavery and there is no excuse for any state government to have it fly on state grounds or to have its design on license plates and elsewhere. I wrote about this and more of the flag’s history and the current situation in the inaugural post for a new blog Chronicles of Evil, a couple of days ago: “True Evil: The Defense of the Confederate Flag”.

I expect to see the repugnant limbaugh, coulter and kristol say these things, but it’s disappointing to see Webb join in their misguided, ignorant rants.

About theHoundDawg

For many years as a lawyer, I saw much of the good and bad of society, and did what I could to right many wrongs. The lack of understanding of what is good and bad, right and wrong, just and unjust, as evidenced by such events as the election of King W as president, (who as such far surpassed the evil of richard nixon but not quite that of ronald reagan) lead me in a new direction, to spend my time trying to understand what is happening to our society, to try as best I can to spread my insights to others, and along the way to maybe even eke out a living through the internet.
