New York’s 11th Congressional District Says It All

Staten Island, New York is home to the state’s 11th Congressional District, and with the mid-term election three days away, the polling of voters in the 11th dramatically shows exactly what is wrong with US voters, and how their priorities, values, and voting patterns can make one wonder just how far awry the grand experiment of democracy has gone.

gop incumbent Michael Grimm, who has become known to the American public this year for two things, and two things only, neither of which has anything to to with his duties as a member of Congress, is leading his Democratic opponent Domenic Recchia, according to a Siena College poll, by 19 points, 53% to 34%.

What has Grimm done to gain his measure of notoriety?

Well, first, this past January, on a televised newscast where he was being questioned by a local New York reporter, Grimm threatened, for all to hear, including those watching the broadcast, to throw the reporter over a nearby balcony and to "break him in half". Why, because the reporter dared to ask Grimm about a pending criminal investigation of his campaign fiances.

As if that was not bad enough, four months later, after a two-year investigation of crimes unrelated to his campaign finances, Grimm was indicted by federal prosecutors on numerous charges of massive wire and mail fraud, all

stemming from business activities occurring prior to his election to Congress. Rather, the alleged criminal activity occurred while he owned and operated a Manhattan restaurant called “Healthalicious”. The indictment alleges that Grimm concealed more than $1 Million in income, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in employee wages, as he “engaged in schemes to fraudulently under-report the wages he paid his workers … and fraudulently under-report the true amount of money the restaurant earned to both federal and New York State tax and insurance authorities.”

A big part of the impeachment of President Bill Clinton had to do with allegations that he lied under oath in a deposition, regarding issues that had nothing to do with his Presidency. Well, amazingly similar allegation have been made about Grimm, that while a member of Congress, he lied while under oath in a deposition taken in a civil suit brought by his former employees. Where is all that gop outrage that called for Bill Clinton’s head? Right.

Oh, what segment of the US population do republicans hate the most, except, of course for any and all Democrats? Why illegal aliens, of course. And, guess what? The indictment also alleges that Grimm "knowingly and intentionally" hired illegal immigrants to work at "Healthalicious". Where is the outrage there? Who is calling for the building
of a fence around “Healthalicious”?

So, three days to go, and it would take a major upset for Grimm to be defeated. What gives? What can these voters possibly be thinking, and what of the gop hierarchy? How can they continue to support this man?

Easy. Any republican, no matter how big a criminal or how outrageous a sociopath, is better than any Democrat. That is how the gop thinks, and that message, with their unlimited funds and massive propaganda machine, is eaten up by the lemmings who vote the party ticket without an iota of intelligent thought.

And that is what is wrong with this country, and just maybe, with the modern incarnation of democracy. Fueled by unlimited money from partisan sources, there is no rational, educated thought, only rote responses to external stimuli. And we are all paying massively for it.

About theHoundDawg

For many years as a lawyer, I saw much of the good and bad of society, and did what I could to right many wrongs. The lack of understanding of what is good and bad, right and wrong, just and unjust, as evidenced by such events as the election of King W as president, (who as such far surpassed the evil of richard nixon but not quite that of ronald reagan) lead me in a new direction, to spend my time trying to understand what is happening to our society, to try as best I can to spread my insights to others, and along the way to maybe even eke out a living through the internet.
