The New Federal Budget: What Actually Got In

As Congress has now passed a new budget and as the President will undoubtedly sign it into effect, there are numerous provisions that extreme right wing interests have managed to include, provisions that boggle the mind as they, if nothing else, render good sense obsolete.

One finds in the new budget that will control the lives of 300,000,000 Americans for the next year, the following:

1) A provision that prohibits the US Embassy to the Vatican from being moved. Where did this issue ever come from? Well, back in 2008, g w bush administration people decided that the US mission to the Vatican would be safer and better off if it were closer to the Vatican, and plans were begun to move it adjacent to the US’s Italian embassy, which is

nearer to the Vatican than where it was, and still is, located. This was a non-issue until a few months ago, when the right-wing propaganda machine got hold of info on current progress of the move, and blasted citizens’ ears with the outright lie that the Obama administration was in the process of closing the Vatican embassy. Even Jeb Bush got into the fray, famously, now, tweeting his

indignation with the POTUS who he alleged was closing the embassy as retribution for Catholic Church opposition to provisions of the Affordable Care Act. See “The bogus claim that Obama is ‘closing’ the Vatican embassy“;

2) A prohibition against any enforcement of earlier legislation that prohibits the continued production and distribution of incandescent light bulbs. This was another anti-Obama manufactured “scandal”, that fixed noise played to the hilt. Right-wing racist whack jobs alleged in 2011 as the phase-out of incandescent bulbs began that it was yet another an Obama plot somehow socialize and control the population of the US. They praised gop officials who were beginning a move to reverse the ban. Of course, fox’s stooges and other pundits totally ignored that the phase out was included in the Energy independence and Security Act of 2007 signed into law by g w bush. Now, three years later, these same whackos have managed to neuter the law, likely reversing the effect of a significant resource-saving and energy-conserving program;

3) A prohibition against the Army of Corps of Engineers restricting what materials can be dumped into certain sensitive areas such as streams and wetlands. In 2002, the bush administration

expanded what “fill materials” mining companies could legally dump into steams, wetlands, and other areas of public lands. EPA reports have shown the destruction to the environment that this has caused, and the Obama administration has indicated it would take steps to remedy the situation, including adding restrictions on what types of materials can be dumped. This budget item prohibits any such limitations;

4) A prohibition against funding implementation of an administration ban on the financing of coal-fired power plants in developing countries. Under its Climate Action Plan, President Obama ordered U.S. agencies making international loans, such as the U.S.

Export-Import Bank, from funding such plants. The power of giant US corporations involved in the construction and operation of such plants didn’t much like this, and hence, the budget includes a prohibition against any funding to enforce the ban; and

5) A prohibition against any federal funding to ACORN,

the community organizing group that was ostracized several years ago over phony allegations of participation in alleged voter fraud, when in reality it was ACORN that was the victim of voter registration fraud, and which ceased to exist in 2010. I wrote all about that here in “An American Tragedy…. Bought and Paid For By the republican party”.

There are many, many more such items included in the new budget, many even more stupid and more partisan. It’s not exactly light reading, but its worth a perusal.

About theHoundDawg

For many years as a lawyer, I saw much of the good and bad of society, and did what I could to right many wrongs. The lack of understanding of what is good and bad, right and wrong, just and unjust, as evidenced by such events as the election of King W as president, (who as such far surpassed the evil of richard nixon but not quite that of ronald reagan) lead me in a new direction, to spend my time trying to understand what is happening to our society, to try as best I can to spread my insights to others, and along the way to maybe even eke out a living through the internet.
